How can I get an ESA (electrical) permit?

An ESA permit (Electrical Safety Authority) is responsible for the enforcement and inspection of the Ontario electrical code. The ESA must be contacted prior to staring any electrical project or alteration. Refer to your local electrical contractor for more information or go to their website  www.esasafe.com.


Who do I contact for a Septic Permit?

The Health Unit needs to be contacted prior to any project involving adding bedrooms or bathrooms to a dwelling, installing a new septic system or altering or replacing an existing system. Approval from the Northeastern Public Health is required for these projects BEFORE applying for a Building Permit. You can call your local Health Unit or go to their website for more information.


How long will it take to get my Building Permit?

The timeframe for issuing a building permit varies based on the class of building. Generally, the chief building official must issue or refuse a permit within the following time periods:

  • 10 days for certain residential buildings and small structures.

  • 15 days for specific farm buildings and other classifications.

  • 20 days for larger buildings and retirement homes.

  • 30 days for post-disaster buildings and specific other classifications.

These time periods do not include Saturdays, holidays, and other days when the offices are closed.


Where do I get the building setback and zoning requirements for my Municipality?

Building setbacks, zoning and bylaws are specific to your Municipality. They are responsible for the enforcement and other aspects of the zoning bylaw. Make sure that you conform to these regulations before you start your project.


When do I need to contact the Ministry of Agriculture?

The Ministry of Agriculture will need to be contacted anytime a structure involving livestock is proposed. Check with your Municipality or visit the Ministry of Agriculture’s website: www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/agops/index.html


What is the Building Code?

The building code is the regulation made under the building code Act 1992. The building code sets out technical requirements for the construction (including renovation) and demolition of buildings, the change of existing building where the change would result in an increase in hazard and maintenance and operation of septic systems.

The code is essentially a set of minimum provisions respecting the safety of buildings with the reference to public health, fire protection, accessibility and structural efficiency .Its primary purpose is the promotion of public safety through the application of appropriate uniform building standards.
